Dr. Jonathan F. Dickens, MD, COL, MC, USAR

Shoulder, Knee, Hip, and Sports Medicine Specialist Duke University

Dr. Jonathan F. Dickens is a shoulder, knee and sports medicine surgeon at the prestigious Duke University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Durham, NC. He is an internationally recognized author, lecturer, researcher and educator heavily involved in research, advanced arthroscopy techniques and the prevention of new and recurrent sports injuries. He holds leadership positions and appointments in numerous local, national and international associations including the Arthroscopy Association of North America, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and American Orthopaedic Association. He is the past president of the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Lieutenant Colonel Dickens serves in the United States Army Reserves as a Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Dickens is the past Chief of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the renowned WRNMMC where he was the orthopaedic consultant to Office of the President of the United States and White House Medical Unit, Vice-Chair Department of Surgery USUHS, Professor of Surgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Director of Orthopaedic Research, and Adjunct Faculty of the John A. Feagin Jr Sports Medicine Fellowship at West Point.

He received his Bachelor’s degree from Davidson College and his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine, with honors where he was inducted into the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed the John A Feagin Jr Sports Medicine Fellowship at West Point and the Hospital for Special Surgery, Travelling Fellowships at The Steadman Philippon Clinic in Vail, Colorado, Massachusetts General Hospital, the AOA North American Travelling Fellowship, AOA American British Canadian Travelling, and the AOSSM European Travelling Fellowship. Dr. Dickens has been in practice over 15 years.

Dr. Dickens joined Duke Orthopaedic Sports Medicine as a specialist in sports medicine, shoulder, knee and hip surgery. He is a Team Physician for Duke Athletics and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery.
